Uncommon Senses III: Back to the Future of the Senses is an international, interdisciplinary conference featuring presentations by scholars from across the social sciences, humanities and fine arts interested in exploring the future of the senses in a rapidly-changing world.

There will be panels and workshops on such themes as:

  • Engaging the senses through design
  • Law and the regulation of the senses
  • Coming to be of the sensor society
  • Sensory challenges of climate change
  • Sense-based research methods (sensory ethnography, sensory cartography)
  • Multisensory education
  • Sensory alterity (including critical disability studies)
  • The urban sensorium
  • Sentient ecologies

The conference will feature two plenary addresses, over 120 individual papers, panels, workshops, art installations and videos spread over the four days. The conference begins with the keynote address entitled “Touchy Feely Manifesto: Design for the Senses” by Ellen Lupton, Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, NYC, followed by a Virtual Get Together (Con-sensus). The Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be filled with panels, individual paper presentations, workshops, virtual art installations and film screenings.
