About the Event

To challenge Cary’s negative notions about divestment, we will be bringing in Patrick DeRochie who will speak to the merits of divestment and bring to light the importance of having this strategy within an investor’s toolkit. We aim to address one of the most contentious topics in sustainable investing, what is the most effective way to drive change – engagement or divestment? This event will be moderated by Julie Segal, who will be questioning both sides.

Audience

About the Speakers

Cary Krosinsky is a leading global educator, author and advisor teaching popular classes at institutions that include Brown, NYU, and Yale.

He was a member of the NY State Common Decarbonization Advisory Panel appointed by Governor Cuomo and Comptroller DiNapoli which informed the fund’s June 2019 Climate Action Plan, now actively implementing his suggestion of minimum standards and increasing its sustainable investments to $20B, and he advises other global asset owners and investors on similar considerations.

His most recent, 7th book, Modern China, calls for better relations between China and the West for the sake of solving climate change, produced with the Sustainable Finance Institute (SFI) where he is co-founder, and which among other projects launched the recent Certified Sustainable Financial Analyst (CSFA) designation for the global sustainable finance industry in 2020. SFI also is creating the clean energy theme for the GlIN’s IRIS+ system and is also working with a major index provider on a better ESG framework for Asia and hosted the Future of Sustainable Finance in China at PHBS in Shenzhen in 2019.

His earlier books on sustainable finance are considered seminal, helping steer what used to be known as socially responsible investing from negative to more positive approaches starting in the mid-2000s. He is also author of papers on the intersection of finance, capital and the low carbon transition, co-founder of Real Impact Tracker and the Carbon Tracker Initiative, and advisor to The Metals Company, which recently merged into a SPAC at a valuation of $2.8B.

Julie Segal works as a Senior Analyst at the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. She oversees a portfolio of the Foundation’s impact investments and helps align sustainable finance with an equitable transition to a net-zero economy.

She combines sustainable finance with community engagement and environmental advocacy. As an Associate at Youth Climate Lab, a global youth-for-youth nonprofit, Julie consults on partnership strategies and supports programs that engage youth in climate policy, finance, and entrepreneurship. She sits on the Board of two community non-profit organizations. She was selected as a 2021 Fellow in the Maison de l’Innovation Sociale's Civic Incubator and as a Delegate to the 2021 OECD Forum by Young Diplomats of Canada. Julie was recently named a Top 21 Young Impact Leader by the Future of Good and RBC Future Launch for her work advancing a just transition in sustainable finance.

Julie completed the University of Oxford’s Sustainable Finance Foundation Course where she researched how to finance a just transition in Canada. She graduated McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2017. She is published in Canada's National Observer and authored a chapter in Palgrave MacMillan's book titled Innovations in Social Finance.

Patrick DeRochie is Senior Manager at Shift Action for Pension Wealth and Planet Health. He has wide-ranging experience in climate and energy policy, campaigning, and government relations. At Shift, he is focused on analyzing the fossil fuel and climate-related investments of Canadian pension funds and building a network of pension beneficiaries to invest their savings in a zero-carbon future. Previously, Patrick was Climate and Energy Program Manager with Environmental Defence and Political Organizer with one of Canada’s largest healthcare unions. Patrick has been deeply involved in developing federal and provincial climate and energy policy and acts as a regular commentator in national media.
