Series Overview

According to the United Nations, biodiversity is the backbone of the world’s economy. Businesses must acknowledge their impact and dependency on biological diversity and ecosystem servicesAchieving the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity provides opportunities for businesses, and in doing so, better positions them to exploit those opportunities and avoid risks.

SUSTAINABILITY TOPIC AGGREGATOR

OVERVIEW

Ecosystem services that are the backbone to our global economy delivered by biodiversity such as crop pollination, water purification, flood protection and carbon sequestration, are essential to human life. Large portions of the world's terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic habitats have been destroyed or degraded by humans. According to the WWF, 75% of the Earth’s ice-free land surface has already been significantly altered, most of the oceans are polluted, and more than 85% of the area of wetlands has been lost, leading to 1 million species are being threatened with extinction over the coming decades. These dramatic changes are driven by a plethora of issues including land-use change, over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution, invasive alien species and climate change. Despite international efforts to conserve and sustainably use natural resources, biodiversity loss is happening at a detrimental rate. Action to halt and subsequently reverse biodiversity loss needs to be scaled up fast.
