Title: Research Approaches for Scalable and Adaptable IoT Networks in Highly Mobile Scenarios

 

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) has become the umbrella for the integration of a myriad of concepts, including sensor networks, mobile computing, wireless technologies, and fog/edge/cloud computing.  For proper integration, communication protocols need to be designed to provide the IoT nodes and IoT infrastructure the adaptability necessary to meet both communications requirements and scalability, particularly in constrained environments and highly dynamic scenarios. This presentation will address a set of contributions researching the design, modeling, evaluation, and implementation of cross-layer networking protocols in highly mobile IoT environments. The contributions explore the use of device-to-device communications, network diversity, context-aware networking, among others, in applications that range from the Internet of Vehicles to a space IoT network served by nanosatellite constellations.

Bio: Sandra Céspedes (IEEE M’12, SM’17) received her B.Eng. (2003) and Specialization (2007) degrees in Telematics Engineering, and Management of Information Systems, from Universidad Icesi, Colombia, and a Ph.D. (2012) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. She is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering and the head of the Wireless Networking Research Group (WiNet), University of Chile, Santiago, Chile. She is the Head of Research at NIC Chile Research Labs and an Associate Researcher with the Advance Center of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E). Dr. Céspedes serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine and the IEEE Internet of Things Journal. She received the Best Undergraduate Teacher Award in 2019 from the University of Chile. Her research focuses on the topics of vehicular communications systems and networking, cyber-physical systems, and routing and protocols design for restricted devices and the Internet of Things.
