Canada’s electoral landscape is changing. But in a world where posting, tweeting and ‘hashtagging’ are everyday occurrences, the laws governing elections remain rooted in the past. Mr. Côté will explore the current laws governing this country’s federal elections and some of the challenges of enforcing legislation that pre-dates the internet era. With participants, he will step through some of the newly arising 21st century problems affecting Canada’s electoral system and discuss the ways in which current legislation may be modified, reformed or rewritten to strengthen Canada’s electoral compliance and enforcement regime. This interactive workshop will place the emphasis on the exchange of participants’ ideas and views on how to better predict and mitigate electoral challenges going forward.
