Guy Peters has spent his career studying national governments and institutions and has extensive knowledge on the comparative strength of various types of policies and policy strategies in advanced industrial democracies. He will draw on this experience to take participants through the detailed functions of the public service, the role of civil servants, and the sustainability of welfare state policies and their implementation in the 21st century.

In his workshop, Dr. Peters will introduce participants to the current and future challenges facing the public service in 2017, focusing on the leadership functions public servants can take on within their organization and within the policy process to produce fair and sustainable policies for future generations. He will also highlight future challenges posed by diverse interests and societies with growing income gaps and will outline the ways in which democracies like Canada can cope with such challenges moving forward.
