In her recent research Prof Tellier has documented a use of aller 'to go' in French which is similar in meaning to expressive go, but with an altogether different syntactic behaviour. Using these French data as examples, she will show how different tests can be used to determine 1) the syntactic status of a verb (lexical, functional/semi-lexical); 2) whether the sentence in which it appears is biclausal or monoclausal; and 3) how it compares to other « semi-lexical/quasi-functional » verbs such as causative faire.
