M.N.Srikanta Swamy is a Concordia trailblazer who helped shape the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science during his career of advancing research and supporting generations of students for almost 60 years.

Currently a research professor and Honorary Concordia Research Chair in Signal Processing with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Swamy has supervised more than 50 PhD theses and mentored over 50 post-doctoral fellowships and research associates.

Swamy served as the founding chair of Concordia’s Department of Electrical Engineering from 1970 to 1977, and dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science from 1977 to 1993.

During his tenure as dean, Swamy helped establish new undergraduate programs, such as Canada’s only building engineering degree and the first Computer Engineering program in Quebec.

He has published more than 250 journal articles, holds five patents and has co-authored nine books.

He is a fellow of many professional societies, including the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Electrical Engineers, U.K, and the Engineering Institute of Canada. Swamy has served as editor-in-chief of the Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing (CSSP) journal since 1999, and in 2013, CSSP instituted the Best Paper Award in his name.

He is a recipient of many IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society awards, including its highest honour, the Mac Van Valkenburg Award in 2022. He has also received the John Choma Education Award in 2000, the Golden Jubilee Medal in 2000 and the Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award in 1986.

In 2021, Swamy was awarded the prestigious IEEE Montreal Section Gold Medal, the first for a Concordia professor since its inception in 2013.
