Cynthia Cherrier

2019-2020 Dean's List Award Winner — Software engineering

About Cynthia

Cynthia is a software engineering student at the Gina Cody School. She is the recipient of the Concordia University Entrance Scholarship and the Stelvio Software Engineering Excellence Scholarship. She has made the Dean’s list three years while studying at Concordia. In addition to her impressive grades, she has served her peers as a teaching assistant.

Her one piece of advice for peers...

Be proud of your accomplishments and learn from your mistakes!

Three keys to her academic success

  • Do not be afraid to reach out for help from people around you, whether it is to understand the material you’re trying to learn, or to make sure your studies are not affecting other areas of your life.
  • Discipline and consistency. Even when things get hectic, try not to fall behind on the coursework. Trying to catch up at the end of the semester is harder than to make a little bit of progress at a time.
  • Seek opportunities to learn outside of classes. Get involved in projects, consider doing research or internships.

Two study tips

  • Divide the work to be done into small goals that you can complete every day to get a sense of accomplishment. Get a planner and write everything you need to do for each day of the week in advance.
  • Take notes while you’re studying and attending classes, write down what you don’t understand and then ask questions to the people in your class, your teachers or teaching assistants.

Cynthia's next big goal

I plan on furthering my career as a software engineer in the video game industry.
