Miya Adout

Owner and Music Therapist, Miya Music Therapy in Ontario

1.  How are you applying your degree in music therapy from Concordia?

I provide music therapy services through my private practice to older adults in long-term care facilities, and also work with infants, adolescents and adults with physical and developmental challenges. The program prepared me to work in a variety of settings and I consistently draw on coursework and lectures to meet the unique needs of clients.

2. What do you value most from your Concordia music therapy experience?

The training was practical and hands-on, and it also provided me with a strong theoretical foundation. The multiple clinical practicum opportunities in both my Graduate Certificate and Masters degree proved to be invaluable experiences, equipping me with applicable clinical skills while bringing the theory and coursework to life. What I value above all else was the dedication of the professors and supervisors. They took extra time and effort to help students achieve both their academic and career goals. Each one has contributed to my understanding of music therapy and my practice in their own unique way.

3. What advice would you give to someone considering advanced music therapy training?

When I was first considering music therapy, I reached out to music therapists in my community and was able to observe their work. Afterwards, there was absolutely no question in my mind – I knew I had to follow this career path. It’s an exciting profession that is never the same from one day to the next. The Masters degree in music therapy pushes you academically, musically, and internally – but you will come out on the other end with a fulfilling profession and a thesis to your name!

A powerful healing tool: Music therapy can significantly increase a client’s quality of life
