Conceived and created during quarantine and curfew restrictions, “Personal Pandemic” offers an original take on the human impact of COVID-19 in a unique desktop opera format. It was recorded with iPhones and other remote recorders while following social distancing protocols. The opera freely mixes hip-hop, chamber music and electroacoustics in a media-centred opera experience for the viewer/listener. The opera lasts 24 minutes, and features 3 of Montréal’s most impressive singers: sopranos Fredericka Petit-Homme and Marie-Annick Béliveau and rapper Naïka Champaïgne.

Personal Pandemic was created by the RISE project, led by Dr. Eldad Tsabary and funded by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). RISE (Reflective Iterative Scenario Enactments) is a Le PARC (Performing Art Research Cluster) research-creation project designed to enact and investigate cataclysmic scenarios in 10 mini-operas.

The opera screening will be followed by a panel with the creative team:

Singers Fredericka Petit-Homme, Marie-Annick Béliveau, and Naïka Champagne,

Creators: Tim Brady (composer), John Sobol (librettist), and Naïka Champagne (libretto and composition, “I’m going Down”)

Co-directors: Olivia McGilChrist (also video artist), and Ayam Yaldo (also set designer)

Technical coordinator: Alana Devito,

And project director: Eldad Tsabary
