In collaboration with Concordia’s 4TH SPACE, the Institute for Urban Futures will be hosting Dutch/Belgium designer Annelys de Vet for a public talk on designing and publishing alternative cartographies and subjective maps. This talk is part of a four day interdisciplinary workshop between Subjective Editions and Concordia faculty and students on mapping the city of Montréal from inside out. What makes life in Montréal specific? What are the issues at stake; the poetry as the misery, the personal and the political? Which perspectives to draw from, and whose voices to hear? Together with a diverse and inclusive group of creative minds we will capture these narratives in visual mappings, infographics, photo series and other cartographic explorations.

Subjective Atlas Editions is a publishing initiative that develops and disseminates bottom-up engaged mapping publications. In collaboration with local communities, an expanding series of subjective atlases have been produced. These volumes include mapping a country, region or geo-political entity in a personal way. Workshops with local cultural institutes, communities, artists, designers, photographers and architects are invited as participants to map their city, country, environment, a daily life, or social concerns etc., from their own perspective.

Annelys de Vet (1974, NL) is a Belgium based designer, curator and initiator. De Vet’s work explores the role of design in relation to the public and political discourse. She has headed the MA in Design ‘Think Tank for Visual Strategies’ at the Sandberg Instituut from 2009 to 2019 and is currently developing a temporary Masters Design program in conflicted realities with a focus on Palestine, and conducting a PhD in the same field at the University of Antwerp. She is the founding and artistic director of the thought provoking design label Disarming Design from Palestine, generating useful products from Palestine that spread alternative narratives about life under occupation. Since 2003, she has initiated Subjective Editions that map countries from a human perspective; including Subjective Atlas of Palestine (2007), Subjective Atlas of Colombia (2015), Subjective Atlas of Brussels (2018) and Subjective Atlas of Pakistan (2018). She co-curated the exhibition Unmapping the World (2014) on critical contemporary mapping practices, for the ExperimentaDesign Biennale, Lisbon, Portugal and for the international Graphic Design Festival in Chaumont (2015).
