The event will be a one-day event devoted to “Translating Arabic in Montreal”.  It will bring together members of several communities: Concordia colleagues and students, the mainstream francophone and anglophone literary communities of Montreal, Arabic-language writers, translators, readers, members of community organizations, and potential new translators.

This event is sponsored by the Cities Cluster at Concordia University and by Figura Research centre. Co-sponsoring groups will include the Association des auteurs de la diaspora (JLD) and The Association of Literary Translators of Canada (LTAC) will be an affiliated partner. The event will feature Arabic-language authors in Montreal and discussions of their work. It will bring together a diverse group of writers, translators and readers to highlight the presence in Montreal of writers who might otherwise not be known, to discuss the challenges of literary translation, to bring to light the themes of imaginative writing by writers who live in Montreal (immigrants, refugees) whose origins are in the Arabic world.

Its aim is to attract new readers and translators of Arabic writing in Montreal, especially Concordia students with a knowledge of Arabic, thereby enlarging and solidifying the community of translators of Arabic in Montreal, both into English and French.

For more information, please contact Sherry Simon (Études françaises) or Ranya Saad (coordinator of the event).
