Mixed Methods research has evolved significantly over the last few decades, becoming something that many researchers (both quantitative and qualitative) aspire to do. The drive toward this approach is driven by several factors including the types of research questions being asked, the trend toward new and innovative data collection exercises by both the qualitative and quantitative camps, the need to dig deeper with our data collection and analyses in order to better understand big problems, as well as the desire to explore and become experts in new and innovative approaches to doing research.
In this workshop, Mary Anderson and Lakshmi Jayaram will undertake a brief review of the foundations of mixed methods research, the factors that have driven its growing popularity, and the core assumptions required to conduct robust and reliable mixed methods research. During the session, they will help participants to better understand the types of data that are conducive to a mixed approach, the ways in which mixed data can be integrated and analyzed, the circumstances that call for such an approach, and the different design types available to researchers. Working with participants, they will also explore some of the many pitfalls that might emerge and how they might avoid them, as well as begin thinking about how to plan to integrate mixed data and methods into their research in the future.
