Jane Mangan is Associate Professor of History and Chair of the Latin American Studies Program at Davidson College in Davidson, NC. She received her PhD in colonial Latin American history from Duke University. Her research on sixteenth-century Peru focuses on the interplay of individual and group responses to the structural forces of colonialism. Her book Trading Roles: Gender, Ethnicity, and the Urban Economy, Potosi, 1545-1700 (Duke University Press) is a social history of trade in Spain's biggest silver mining town in the New World that highlights native Andeans and women in the city's economy. She is currently finishing a book on families in the transatlantic context during the sixteenth century. Tentatively entitled Transatlantic Obligations: Legal and Cultural Constructions of Family in Conquest Era Peru and Spain, the book will be published by Oxford University Press.
