Meet the Ombudsman
Sherra Profit was appointed to the position of Taxpayers’ Ombudsman for Canada on April 10, 2015 by the Minister of National Revenue. Ms. Profit took office on July 6, 2015.
Prior to joining the Office of the Taxpayers' Ombudsman (OTO), Ms. Profit practiced law in Prince Edward Island (PEI) for over 15 years, appearing in the province’s Supreme and Provincial courts. Over this period of practice, she obtained training in and gained valuable experience in a variety of legal disciplines, including alternate dispute resolution, mediation, collaborative law, general litigation, real property, estates and trusts, family law, corporate law, and commercial law.
She has served the PEI legal community with her involvement in a number of professional organizations. Ms. Profit has held a variety of positions including member of the Provincial Council of the Canadian Bar Association, as well as past member of the PEI Law Society Council and the PEI Law Society Council Budget Committee. She also served as vice chair of the PEI Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal.
Public service and giving back to the community are important to Ms. Profit and her volunteer experience reflects her diverse interests and commitments. She was the Chair of the Environmental Advisory Council and advised the PEI Minister of Environment; served as a board director of the Alberton Community Development Corporation, was a board director of Enriched Residential Concepts, which owned and operated an assisted living facility; and served as board director for the West Prince Chamber of Commerce. She has a commitment to youth sport and was the vice-president of the Summerside Ringette Association, and a member of the awards committees for Swim PEI and Ringette PEI.
Ms. Profit has served the public in both official languages throughout her career; while appearing in court, practicing law, and in her current responsibilities as Taxpayers’ Ombudsman.
Ms. Profit has delivered seminars, presentations, and public information sessions on a range of legal topics to various groups, including students and community organizations.
Ms. Profit holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Francis Xavier University and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan. She was called to the Bar in PEI in 2000.
Ms. Profit is married and has two daughters.
