Journalism – Solutions Journalism for Health Improvement

The Department of Journalism at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Solutions Journalism for Health Improvement.

We are seeking a practitioner-teacher-scholar in journalism with a specialization in reporting. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine contemporary approaches to journalistic storytelling and reporting with a critical perspective on health issues. Those interested in the future and potential of solutions journalism are encouraged to apply. 

The ideal candidate will have strong professional journalism credentials, the ability to develop and teach introductory, intermediate and advanced reporting classes, competencies with a range of digital journalism platforms and tools (textual, web, mobile and social media), provide evidence of an evolving program of research or professional outputs in journalism studies, and be driven to be a leader in the field of journalism while contributing to the academic and administrative life of the Department.

The Department of Journalism has been at the forefront of training skilled journalists who think critically about the profession and society for 40 years. The faculty and staff are committed to serving the profession by training skilled, thinking journalists and by producing scholarship, criticism, and commentary on journalism. Our graduates are nationally and internationally recognized journalists who strive to fight injustice in a world awash with misinformation. They are known for their intelligence and rigour. We offer four programs: a three-year undergraduate program, two one-year graduate diplomas, and a two-year MA in Digital Innovation in Journalism Studies. All applicants must possess strong professional and contemporary journalism credentials. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of an evolving program of research or professional outputs in journalism studies. Preference will be given to candidates with a M.A. or Ph.D. in a relevant field, and to those that can demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness.


The appointed candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate, diploma and MA levels, to engage in research or research-creation, including active scholarly or professional publication, and to contribute through service to the life and reputation of the Department, the University and wider community.

Subject to budgetary approval, the position will begin August 1, 2019 and will normally be at the Assistant Professor level.
