Position description

Limited-term appointment positions at Concordia are full-time faculty positions of between 9.5- and 12month duration (the annual salary is pro-rated in the case of shorter contracts). The incumbent is responsible for teaching six (in the case of a 9.5-month contract) or seven three-credit courses per year, and for some administrative and other service roles within the academic unit. Up to two subsequent 12month appointments may be possible, subject to satisfactory job performance, academic unit need, and budgetary approval. 

The Department of English at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, invites applications for six limited-term appointments in the following areas:

  1. Composition and Professional Writing (23_LTA_ENGL_M6)
  2. Digital Writing (23_LTA_ENGL_M5)
  3. Canadian and Indigenous Literature (23_LTA_ENGL_M4)
  4. World Anglophone and Postcolonial Literature (23_LTA_ENGL_M3)
  5. Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century British Literature (23_LTA_ENGL_M)
  6. Creative Writing – Drama (23_LTA_ENGL_M2)

Qualifications and assets

Candidates are encouraged to share any career interruptions or personal circumstances that may have had an impact on their career goals in their letter of application. Since this position supports academic functions of the university, proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French, including reading and grading student work in French, is an asset.

Candidates for the position in Composition and Professional Writing (23_LTA_ENGL_M6) should possess a graduate degree (MA, MFA, or PhD) in English or a cognate field (e.g., Communications, Creative Writing, Education, Fine Arts, or Rhetoric). Candidates should have experience teaching university- or college-level Professional Writing courses (e.g., Technical Writing, Business Writing, Principals and Practice of Editing). Demonstrable expertise in coordinating experiential learning and/or undergraduate programs, managing instructors, curriculum development, and content creation for digital platforms are all assets. 

Candidates for the position in Digital Writing (23_LTA_ENGL_M5) should possess a graduate degree (MA, MFA, or PhD) in English or a cognate field (e.g., Communications, Creative Writing, Education, Fine Arts, or Rhetoric). Candidates should have demonstratable expertise in content creation for digital platforms. Experience teaching university- or college-level Professional Writing courses (e.g., Technical Writing, Business Writing, Digital Publishing and Editing) is an asset. A background in Videogame Studies is also an asset.

Candidates for the position in Canadian and Indigenous Literature (23_LTA_ENGL_M4) will demonstrate competence in nineteenth-century, modern, and contemporary Canadian and Indigenous literature in a variety of genres. Competitive candidates should also be able to teach ENGL 260: Introduction to Literary Study. This position is subject to renewal and priority is given to the incumbent.

Candidates for the position in World Anglophone and Postcolonial Literature (23_LTA_ENGL_M3) will demonstrate teaching competence in the modern and contemporary English-language literature of the Global South in a variety of genres. Competitive candidates should also be able to teach ENGL 260: Introduction to Literary Study. This position is subject to renewal and priority is given to the incumbent.

Candidates for the position in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century British Literature (23_LTA_ENGL_M) will demonstrate competence in both centuries and in a variety of genres. Competitive candidates should also be able to teach ENGL 260: Introduction to Literary Study and ENGL 262: British Literature from 1660 to 1900. This position is subject to renewal and priority is given to the incumbent.  A completed PhD, or one near completion, is necessary for the positions in literature, and a record of scholarly publications is an asset. This position is subject to renewal and priority is given to the incumbent.

Candidates for the position in Creative Writing (23_LTA_ENGL_M2) should have competence to teach playwriting at both the introductory and advanced undergraduate level, as well as screenwriting. The ability to write for other performative or broadcast forms is an asset. This position is subject to renewal and priority is given to the incumbent.
