Player spotlight: Coralie Dumont

Hello to all our supporters, friends, family and alumnae. Welcome to the introductory issue of our Concordia Women’s Basketball Newsletter.

We are excited to bring you a behind-the-scenes-look into our program and the work we do on and off the floor. You are special to our program, and we want to stay connected to you throughout our journey.

We finally get to play

We returned to the court for competition in October for the first time in more than 600 days! We finally got the chance to put those 6 a.m. summer workouts to use. Our trainings included individual skill development, strength and conditioning as well as speed and agility — all of which are needed for success throughout a long season.

That being said, nothing prepares you for competition quite like competition. We had four non-conference games on our schedule, all of which were on the road. We finished 2-2 with wins over the Toronto Varsity Blues and the York Lions, a loss to the Ottawa Gee Gees and a good showing against the Carleton Ravens. We had highs and lows, all of which are to be expected after not competing for an entire season.

More than 600 days of not playing will expose a lot, yet we are committed to the process of dusting off the cobwebs and polishing off the rust. And the key to that will be our consistency.

November opened our conference play, with wins against the McGill Martlets and against Bishop’s Gaiters. A slow start against Laval Rouge et Or and an uncharacteristically poor showing with the UQAM Citadins led to both our losses. It is only December, and the goal is to continue to improve on both ends of the floor. With zero games played this month, we will devout our time and efforts to doing just that: improving. Our best basketball will be played in February and March.

Player spotlight

We had many electrifying performances from our players in the first half, and Coralie Dumont is one of the players we want to acknowledge in this issue.

Coralie is a third-year John Molson School of Business student that I had the pleasure of recruiting from Champlain College St-Lambert. Her size and versatility at the forward position attracted many coaches to her play; we were just lucky enough to have her commit to our program.

Watching her grow and develop over the years — not only on but off the court — is a beautiful thing to witness. She has become more assertive and confident in leading, and she is aware of what makes her special.

As one of our team captains, Coralie is currently averaging 17.5 points, 6 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. “Co” checks all the boxes, even the ones that don’t show up on the stat sheet, which for us is sometimes even more important than the ones that do. We’re excited to see her continue to improve and flourish in the second half of the season.

Our belief: Purpose, Passion, Pride

Our motto this season is “Purpose, Passion & Pride.” We believe that you must have a why, a reason, a purpose for getting up every day and doing what we do. We have a purpose as individuals and as a team and we are in relentless pursuit of achieving it.

Passion assists us on those tough days, those long days, those days after losses when it’s a little tougher to get up and out of bed. It’s an excitement, a love: a love for the game, teammates and all parts of the journey. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Last, but certainly not least, is pride. In everything we do, we must put our certified “Stinger Women’s Basketball” stamp on it. We expect to compete every single day and will take pride in doing so at a high level, night-in and night-out.

Time – Out!

We want to stop and take a moment to acknowledge all those who were in the position to support our program on Giving Tuesday. We can’t thank you enough for helping us get closer to our goal. We appreciate you and we are very grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read our very first newsletter. We hope you enjoyed it and are looking forward to the next issue!

In the meantime, have a ball and enjoy the holidays with friends and family!

Sincerely,

Coach Tenicha Gittens
