Chancellor

 

Duties

The Chancellor is the titular head of the University and serves as an ambassador to the University. The Chancellor presides at convocations and similar ceremonies and performs such official duties as the Board of Governors may designate. In accordance with the By-Laws, the Chancellor is a non-voting observer on the Board of Governors, a member of the Corporation and an Officer of the University.

L. Jacques Ménard

 

On December 9, 2010, the Board of Governors appointed L. Jacques Ménard, O.C., O.Q. as Chancellor of Concordia University, effective January 1, 2011. Prior to his appointment as Chancellor, Mr. Ménard served as Deputy Chancellor from September 23, 2009.

Mr. Ménard is Chairman of BMO Nesbitt Burns and President of BMO Financial Group, Quebec. He is a board director at a number of corporations, foundations, non-governmental organizations and cultural groups and is also a member of policy task forces related to the economy and financial sector. He recently joined the board of the Junior Achievement Foundation, which supports financial literacy, entrepreneurship and leadership skills for young Canadians.

Mr. Ménard published his first book in 2008, titled Si on s'y mettait… and established the Groupe d'action sur la persévérance et la réussite scolaires. Mr. Ménard subsequently published Beyond the Numbers… a Matter of the Heart, which offered solutions to reducing the high school dropout rate.

Mr. Ménard is a graduate of Collège Sainte-Marie, Loyola College and the University of Western Ontario (MBA 1970). He has also received honorary doctorates from Concordia University, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke and York University. Mr. Ménard is an Officer of the Order of Canada and of the Ordre national du Québec.
