GPTK764 - How to be an effective TA?

In this workshop, participants will examine the three phases in the journey of an exemplary effective TA. Phase one focuses on the preparation needed prior to signing up for TA position. The second phase, participants will identify steps they should do during their TAship to be effective teachers. In Phase three, the workshop will focus on what TAs should do when they finish their TAship to keep developing their teaching skills. The workshop will also discuss various scenarios on the different roles of TAs (Lab demonstrator, tutor, and marker).


Learning Objectives


By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Identify what skills they should develop prior to TAship and how to improve them
- Discuss the various tasks TAs conduct during their TAship and how to manage them
- Discuss strategies that TAs can develop to improve their skills after their TAship

Leaders Information


This workshop will be led by Racha Cheikh-Ibrahim, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry with over 8 years of experience as TA at Concordia University. Racha has worked with GradProSkills and the Center for Teaching and Learning since 2014 in various roles including workshop assistant, outreach coordinator and workshop facilitator.
