GPSC22 - General Media Relations Training

This workshop is designed for the Public Scholars program.

Workshop will cover:
• A clarification of the rights and responsibilities of journalists and interview subjects before,
during and after an interview
• The particular demands of interviews depending on the medium and format
o Radio – live or recorded; individual or as a panelist; on a phone-in program
o Television – live or recorded; individual or as a panelist
o Print or web – news or feature length
• Interview preparation
o Telling your story / Crafting your messages
o Handling tough questions
o Language and key messaging
o Body language
• Social media
o Overview of social media tools
o Outline of best practices
• Practice interviews with feedback
o Participants will be videotaped giving a brief interview in a pre-determined format

Leaders Information

Instructor: Fiona Downey, Media Relations Advisor
Before joining Concordia, Fiona Downey was a journalist for 23 years. She was a reporter and anchor at CBC Television as well as a journalist and host of several current-affairs programs at CBC Radio. Fiona was also the radio network arts reporter and a producer for the program Q. Since 2009, Fiona has been a media relations advisor at Concordia, helping position faculty members and researchers for expert commentary on news stories in a variety of media outlets in Montreal, across Canada and internationally.
