How a construction boom in Addis Ababa is affecting neighbourhood life
Hone Mandefro Belaye, a PhD candidate in Social and Cultural Analysis at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, is studying how a construction boom is transforming his native city of Addis Ababa, Ehtiopia.
Specifically, his research looks at how the clearing of slums and the proliferation of high-rise condo towers affects relations between neighbours. Belaye has developed a concept he calls "neighbouring" to examine how these taller structures change peoples' lifestyles.
In the coming years he will be collecting qualitative data onsite linked to the city's rapid demographic, economic and architectural changes.
