Select your courses

At Concordia you can create a schedule that fits your life and your goals. Some programs have greater flexibility than others, but no matter the program, just follow these three easy steps to create your class schedule:

  1. Check your advising requirements
  2. Plan your class schedule
  3. Register for your courses online

1. Academic Advising

Most programs require that newly admitted students receive academic advising or attend an orientation session before they can start their online registration. Details regarding advising can be found in the “Important Admission Information” section of your Offer of Admission. It is important that you fulfill your advising requirements as soon as possible so that you can proceed with registering for your courses. In general, the advising guidelines for the four Faculties are as follows:

John Molson School of Business

New students must watch all five short new student advising videos, found on the JMSB website (johnmolson.concordia.ca/usav) and follow the instructions on how to submit the online Permission to Register Form. Once the Permission to Register Form has been submitted you will be able to register within 72 hours.

Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science

Once you have been accepted, you should register as soon as possible through the MyConcordia Portal. Advising is not required; however, as outlined in your Offer of Admission, you are strongly encouraged to attend one of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science advising sessions. Students accepted into an ENCS program who have completed all required prerequisites will follow a sequence that will lead to graduation after four years (8 terms) of study. Please see encs.concordia.ca/sequences for a summary of program-specific courses ENCS students must follow in their first year of study.

Faculty of Fine Arts

Advising and registration procedures vary by program. Please consult finearts.concordia.ca/advising for specific information for your program. If your program does not require advising before registration, you should register for your courses as soon as possible, taking into consideration the first-year recommended courses listed in the advising information for your program.

Faculty of Arts and Science

Advising is mandatory for all programs in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Please consult fas.newstudentadvising.concordia.ca in order to select an advising appointment convenient for you. Students who are unable to schedule an in-person advising appointment are encouraged to contact their department to make alternate arrangements. For additional Faculty-specific information refer to the Academic Advising Guide for students in the Faculty of Arts and Science: artsandscience.concordia.ca.

2. Plan Your Class Schedule

After reviewing the information for new students that is relevant to your program and — if necessary — after having completed your advising requirements, you are now ready to plan your schedule and register for classes. The two key sources of information when planning your schedule are the online Undergraduate Calendar and the Undergraduate Class Schedule. You can access the Calendar and Class Schedule from the homepage of the MyConcordia Portal.

The Undergraduate Calendar

The online Undergraduate Calendar specifies the courses you will need to complete in order to meet your degree requirements. The Calendar is easy to navigate allowing you to search and download sections by department and look up full course descriptions.

The basic guidelines are as follows:

White Dot
All spaces open for all students.
Half Dot

Most spaces reserved for students whose programs require the course, or for students in the Faculty offering the course. The remaining spaces are open to other students.
Black Dot

All spaces reserved for students in the Faculty offering the course, or whose programs require the course.

3. Register for Your Courses Online

Registration is done online through the MyConcordia Portal. Make sure that you are able to access your Portal before your registration start date. To access the registration page on your MyConcordia Portal, choose the “Registration” tab and then select “Undergraduate Registration.” You can return to your Portal at any time during the registration period to make changes to your schedule. For registration assistance, please contact the helpline for your Faculty.

Register for All Possible Sessions

Your registration start date applies for both terms. As such, you must register for both your fall and winter classes at the same time. If you wait until January to register for winter courses, many classes will already be full, limiting the courses or time selections available to you. Need more help? Check out the online Registration Guide at registrar.concordia.ca/webguide/

Registration Start Date

The 2013-14 registration start date for newly admitted students is as follows:
Fall and Winter 2013-2014 - April 22

Dropping Classes

The only way to formally drop a course, is by doing so through the MyConcordia Portal. Emailing, verbally informing a Concordia representative, or failing to attend class are not sufficient ways to withdraw from a course. Please note that each semester has specific registration and withdrawal deadlines. For a complete list of all important term dates, see the online Undergraduate Calendar. registrar.concordia.ca/calendar/

  • DNE DEADLINE:
You can withdraw from a course with no academic penalty, and a full tuition refund, if you do so before the Did Not Enter (DNE) deadline. Any courses that you drop before the DNE deadline will not appear on your transcript nor will they affect your grade point average (GPA). This allows you to make changes to your schedule during the first few weeks of classes. For an official list of DNE dates, see the Undergraduate Calendar.

  • DISC DEADLINE:
Courses dropped after the DNE deadline but before the Discontinued (DISC) deadline will remain on your record with the notation of “DISC”. There will be no academic penalty associated with discontinued courses (no fail grade), but you will be responsible for paying all tuition and fees associated with the course (including the winter-term fees for any full-year courses). After the DISC deadline, courses cannot be dropped. For an official list of DISC dates, see the Undergraduate Calendar.
