The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies will be hosting its annualProfessional training program on the prevention of mass atrocity crimes in Montreal, Canada. Confirmed speakers include Roméo Dallaire (MIGS Distinguished Senior Fellow), Dr. René Provost (Law Professor, McGill University, Trudeau Fellow), Naomi Kikoler (Deputy Director, Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide), Hélène Laverdière (Member of Parliament, NDP), Sally Smith (The Nexus Fund), Dr. Walter Dorn (Professor of Defence Studies, Royal Military College of Canada) and more. In partnership with Concordia University’s  Loyola Sustainability Research Centre, MIGS will help organize the conference, Avoiding Catastrophe: Linking Armed Conflict, Harm to Ecosystems, and Threats to Public Health. This conference is made possible through partnerships with EcoHealth Alliance, FutureEarth, and the Human Security Institute and is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Ten young scholars from the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation visited MIGS to hear about the work that the Institute is doing. The team spoke about the crisis in Syria, refugees and ISIS’ use of social media for propaganda and recruitment.

Kyle Matthews participated in Concordia’s School of Community and Public Affairs panel discussion, Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War: Tackling the Culture of Impunity.

Kyle Matthews took part in a panel discussion at McGill University’s Institute for the Study of Canada’s annual conference, Canada on the Global Stage: Exploring Canada’s Image and Role in the World. He participated in the panel on “Security, Privacy and Civil Liberties” alongside Professor Frédéric Merand and journalist Michelle Shepard. Marie Lamensch participated in a panel discussion De la Syrie vers le Canada hosted by Amnesty International UdM. Her co-panelists included Denise Otis (Legal Adviser at the UNHCR), Adnan Ghassab al-Mhamied (Syrian Refugee) and Marilyne Tremblay (EUMC/World University Canada).

Kyle Matthews spoke at the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) conference in the Philippines, which brought together state leaders and NGOs to engage in atrocity prevention. Kyle took part in a discussion titled The Challenge of Armed, Non-State Actors in the Prevention/Commission of Atrocities and How National/Regional Actors Can Engage, joined by Chris Rush of Geneva Call and Savita Pawnday, the Deputy Executive Director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.

MIGS Distinguished Senior Fellow, Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, delivered a lecture titled “Auschwitz Never Again” in Amsterdam, and was awarded the Annetje Fels-Kupferschmidt Awardhonouring him for his involvement in the causes against child soldiers and genocide.
