Insomnia is a prominent, prevalent problem in those with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) but it has been undertreated because it was previously thought to be a mere symptom of MDD. However, we now know that insomnia often precedes MDD, and insomnia predicts a suboptimal response to depression therapies.
For those who successfully recover from MDD after treatment, the majority of patients continue to suffer from insomnia, and the presence of this so-called residual insomnia predicts depression and depressive relapse. Thus, this talk will focus on the importance of insomnia treatment and the evidence for treating insomnia in those with MDD.
Finally, we will explore the evidence for treating the insomnia first (i.e., before initiating MDD therapies) and for combining MDD and insomnia therapies.
