Join us for the launch of three new books:
In Violence as a Generative Force, Max Bergholz offers an in-depth look into the descent into intercommunal killing of a small, multi-ethnic community bordering Bosnia and Croatia during the summer of 1941 and the resulting transformation of its residents’ lives. The book’s findings have global implications for the study of mass violence and civil war.
Reproduction and Its Discontents in Mexico is a history of childbirth and contraception that chronicles colonial and nineteenth-century beliefs and practices surrounding conception, pregnancy and its prevention, and birth. Nora Jaffary illuminates the central role that ideas about reproduction, sexuality, and virtue played in Mexico’s transition from colony to nation.
Most people assume that climate change is recent news. In A Temperate Empire: Making Climate Change in Early America, Anya Zilberstein shows that we have been debating the science and politics of climate change for a long time, since before the age of industrialization.
