Bachelor of / Baccalaureate in Engineering (BEng)

Engineers are the builders of modern society. Engineering education is built on a foundation of mathematics and the scientific knowledge appropriate to the particular engineering discipline. Engineering students learn how to apply this knowledge in the analysis and design of products, systems and processes. The background of engineering ensures creative and optimal solutions, while maintaining a rigorous and disciplined approach. Engineers must work to achieve measurable objectives in factors such as efficiency, reliability, mobility, adaptability, economic viability and security. The engineering profession expects of its members competence, understanding of sustainable development and sensitivity to the effect of technology on society.

Concordia University offers programs in Building, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial and Software Engineering. Whitin each of these programs, students also have an opportunity to specialize in areas from aerospace to environment, to telecommunications, to name only a few.

Engineering programs

The BEng prepares students for entry to the engineering profession. All Engineering programs are comprised of the following three components:

Engineering core

This required block of courses gives a thorough grounding in the basics of engineering. Most of the Core courses are taken at the beginning of the program.

Engineering core courses

  • Principles of Electrical Engineering
  • Technical Writing and Communication
  • Professional Practice and Responsibility
  • Sustainable Development and Environmental Stewardship
  • Applied Ordinary Differential Equations
  • Applied Advanced Calculus
  • Probability and Statistics in Engineering
  • Engineering Management Principles and Economics
  • Numerical Methods in Engineering
  • Impact of Technology on Society
  • General Education Elective

Program core

Familiarizes students with the analysis and design aspects of their chosen field of study, e.g. Civil Engineering.

Technical Electives

Provides the opportunity to focus on a particular aspect or sub-discipline of their field of study. Technical electives are available within each program, sometimes grouped into options.

Extended credit program

Students from other education systems, such as graduates of secondary schools from outside the province of Quebec, may be considered for admission to the Extended Credit Program (ECP). All students admitted to the ECP are required to take a minimum of 30 credits in addition to regular (90 or 120 credit) degree program requirements. Some programs require students to take specific first-year courses. Refer to the following sections of the Undergraduate Calendar for details: §71.20.2

Co–operative Education

Concordia is proud to be a leader in the field of co-operative education. Concordia's Institute for Co-operative Education provides the opportunity for students to enhance their university education by gaining practical work experience while pursuing their education.

Students can complete their work terms in private industry, not-for-profit organizations and government agencies, as well as through their own entrepreneurial endeavours. Furthermore, work terms are available locally, nationally, and in some cases internationally.
