Bachelor of / Baccalaureate in Education (BEd)
The Bachelor of/Baccalaureate in Education degree is offered only in the Teaching English as a Second Language.
The B.Ed. Specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language is a 120-credit Specialization program offered to expert speakers of English who have at least a working knowledge of French. This programme is designed for students wishing to teach in elementary and secondary schools.
Full-time students normally take 30 credits each year, that is, a maximum of 15 credits in each of the Fall and Winter terms. Although the program normally takes 4 years, students may be given transfer credits from previous university studies. Up to 60 credits may be transferred from other degree programs, which are completed, or in progress.
The program includes a practicum at the adult level, done in the first year of the program, and four day-time internships in three different terms.
Career Opportunities
Graduates who satisfy the requirements of the Ministry of Education of Quebec will be recommended to the Ministry for immediate, permanent provincial teacher certification. No further probation is required. Quebec certification is normally valid in other Canadian provinces and territories, subject to satisfying some additional requirements. Teachers of ESL are considered to be in the second most-wanted category of teachers (after teachers of math and science) in the province and graduates often have several job offers on graduation.
Program Structure
The programme requires 90 credits for the Specialization programme plus 30 elective credits. The 90 credits involve a stimulating and well-balanced group of selections from three areas: theory courses, method courses, and internships. The internships are undertaken in elementary, secondary and adult level classes.
The programme has a strong emphasis on language learner development. We believe that it is important to know how learners grow and develop in order to better meet their needs. To facilitate this, the internships progress from adult to elementary and secondary placements.
Extended Credit Program
The Extended Credit Program is designed for graduates of secondary schools outside Quebec. It requires the completion of 30 additional credits, beyond the 120-credit degree program. These credits are either elective courses or specific prerequisites in a discipline.
BEd Degree Program 1st Year Compulsory Courses and Electives:
- 30 elective credits (maximum of 12 credits outside the Faculty of Arts and Science)
