Biology

Are you fascinated by living organisms, the environment, or the latest breakthroughs in DNA technology? If so, consider an education and career in the biological sciences. The Department offers a broad education in the fundamentals of the biological sciences. With a variety of programs to choose from and an opportunity to conduct original, independent research in the areas of behavioural ecology, biochemistry, cell biology, conservation biology, entomology, fish ecology, genetics, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular ecology, plant biology, and wildlife ecology, our students can truly expand their horizons in the field of biology.

Biology

  • Honours in Biology — 72 credits
    Designed for outstanding students who wish to follow a vigorous sequence of courses in preparation for graduate work or professional training. A high level of performance is required to enter and remain in the program.

  • Specialization in Biology — 60 credits
    Similar to honours, but no special performance level is required and it does not require Independent Study.

  • Major in Biology — 45 credits
    Designed for students not wishing a heavy specialization in the subject. The major is often taken together with a major or minor from another department.

  • Minor in Biology — 24 credits
    Highly flexible and designed for students whose main interest is in another department.

Cell and Molecular Biology

  • Honours in Cell and Molecular Biology — 72 credits
    Provides students with the theoretical, analytical, and hands‑on laboratory training in preparation for graduate work in molecular biology or a career in the health sciences.

  • Specialization in Cell and Molecular Biology — 66 credits
    Similar to honours, but no special performance level is required and it does not require Independent Study.

Ecology

  • Honours in Ecology — 72 credits
    Provides students with theoretical, practical and hands‑on field training in preparation for graduate work in the ecological sciences or a career in the environmental sciences.

  • Specialization in Ecology — 60 credits
    Similar to honours, but no special performance level is required and it does not require Independent Study.
