Building Engineering involves all aspects in the life cycle of enclosed built facilities (conception, planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation), whether commercial, residential, industrial or institutional. The building engineer considers the design of the complete building: its structural properties, energy analysis, the materials to be used, the choice of heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems, lighting requirements and electrical power requirements. The ultimate goal is to provide a comfortable indoor environment, with respect to the thermal, visual and acoustic comfort, while following a sustainable design approach.
BEng in Building Engineering — 119 credits
Introduces topics such as building materials, structural analysis and design, building envelope, acoustics, lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, economics, and project management. Students choose technical electives related to the design of various phases of a building. A final year design project focused on the multidisciplinary approach and teamwork is compulsory for all students entering the fourth year.
- Design of multi storey commercial buildings (structural systems, heating ventilating and air conditioning systems), including site analysis, and the preparation of floor plans
- The energy audit of an existing house
- Design of an atrium or solarium
Sample courses include:
Building Engineering Drawing and Design Statics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Structural Analysis I & II, Structural Design I & II, Acoustics and Lighting, Building Science, HVAC System Design, Capstone Building Engineering Design Project
Students may gather data on site and return to the office for further study and research. They may also assist in preparing plans for the electrical and plumbing systems. During final work terms students may conduct field surveys, assist in preparing contract documents, prepare and track change orders, prepare preliminary drafts, and conduct site visits to monitor and document progress on various projects.
Building Engineering (BEng - Option) requirements: Minimum cut-off averages, admission statistics and program requirements.
