Linguistics

Linguistics programs offer a sound linguistics basis and a rigorous academic and scientific investigation of the phenomena of language in general, and of certain languages in particular.

Honours in Linguistics — 60 credits

Designed to provide students with a thorough foundation for graduate studies. Areas of emphasis include standard subfields of the discipline: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and typology. The interaction of theoretical courses, data-oriented courses and courses in historical and comparative linguistics (both Indo-European and non-Indo-European) forms a diverse and substantial foundation for the exceptional student who hopes to do graduate work in Comparative Indo-European, theoretical linguistics, or any other area related to linguistics.

Major in Linguistics — 42 credits

A diverse program that includes topics of a broad philosophical, sociological and historical nature leading to the minutely detailed analysis of specific data. The program strengthens and refines students' intellectual skills through in-depth training in the writing of grammars and formulation of rules by introducing the rich tradition of linguistic scholarship, as well as the critical examination and discussion of acknowledged masters of linguistic thought.

Minor in Linguistics — 24 credits

Designed for students already enrolled in a program at Concordia University.
