Additional Requirements for Film Production

General Guidelines

Applicants to both the Film Production and Film Animation programs (major and/or minor) must submit separate portfolios and letters of intent for each program.

In the case of collective or collaborative projects, applicants must clearly define their role within the production.

The Department will retain written material submitted by applicants, including transcripts, letter of intent and creative writing. Applicants are strongly encouraged to make and retain copies of all material submitted.

Film Production Portfolio:

Applicants are encouraged to submit work, especially moving image work, which reflects their originality. Although it is advantageous to submit examples of creative film work, applicants may submit examples of their creative work from up to three of the following categories: film, music, photography, poetry, prose, scriptwriting, video, visual arts (such as painting, sculpture, drawing).

Creative writing may be submitted but should be limited to a total of five typewritten pages.

Photographers may submit 10 to 20 photographic slides or prints. Photographs should be unframed and unmounted and not exceed 8 1/2" x 11" including matting (matting is optional).

Visual material (such as paintings, drawings, sculptures) may be submitted in digital format on DVD or CD ROM, or in print format.

Video submissions should be submitted on DVD (NTSC, PAL or SECAM) and should not exceed six minutes total running time. If the submission is a section of a longer video, it should be excerpted or be sent with specific instructions on the viewing start time (otherwise the selection committee will view only the first six minutes). Video material submitted in formats other than DVD will not be considered. AVI, QT or other files may fail on playback and material linked to websites is discouraged due to unreliable links or failure on playback.

The submission should be accompanied by a statement clearly explaining the applicant’s role in the production of the material or the context in which the project was produced and how the material reflects the applicant’s aesthetic approach.

The Letter of intent must:

  • be approximately 500 words long, written in either English or French;
  • indicate the applicant’s reasons for applying to the School of Cinema, as well as his/her expectations of the program;
  • describe the applicant's past achievements and short- and long-term goals as they relate to the area of cinema.

Admissions Evaluation Form

The evaluation form must be completed and submitted with the portfolio. If applying to multiple programs within the School of Cinema, applicants must list and rank their choice of programs on the form. A copy may be obtained from the School or downloaded from cinema.concordia.ca/forms.

Academic Records

These should include, where applicable, high school, community college, Cegep and university transcripts. This is a student copy of the transcript(s), not the official copy sent to the Application Centre.

Portfolio Retrieval

All applicants may pick up their portfolios at the School beginning June 1. Unclaimed portfolios will be discarded in early fall.
