Admission Requirements for Teaching of English as a Second Language (Certificate)

Program Type

Limited Enrolment Program: The number of applications does not normally significantly exceed the number of places available. An entrance standard is set and admission is granted on an ongoing basis. Once capacity is reached, no more students can be admitted to the program. Departmental recommendation needed.

Applicants to the Certificate must have completed, as a minimum, a first bachelor's degree.

Additional Requirements

  • Letter of intent outlining the purpose and reason for selecting this program/discipline
  • Knowledge of written and spoken English, as determined by a placement or proficiency test, the results of which could lead to a refusal to admit to the program or to the imposition of specified make-up courses
  • Reference/Assessment forms

Admission Procedure

As well as completing an online application, applicants for the TESL programs must obtain a departmental application form from the Department of Education website: doe.concordia.ca and return it completed to the Department by March 1.

Minimum Cut-off Averages

(Minimum Cut-off Averages should be used as indicators. Data may change depending on the quality of the application pool.)

  • Quebec Cegep (CRC): DEC
  • Canadian High Schools: The Faculty of Arts and Science prefers students for these programs to have a 70% average and above, however, based on space availability, students below this average may still be considered. Admission is not guaranteed.
  • U.S. High Schools: 2.5
  • External Transfers: C
  • International Bacc. (IB): 27
