Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering program provides the fundamentals needed for a successful career in electrical engineering, namely, mathematics, engineering science, circuit analysis, electronics, and computer systems, and features a variety of specializations, allowing students to customize their degrees to their own interests.

BEng in Electrical Engineering — 120 credits

  • Electronics/VLSI Option: Includes courses in analog and digital electronics, VLSI design, semiconductor devices, and process technology. These courses jump-start students for a career in the ever-broadening field of electronics.
  • Telecommunications Option: Includes courses in digital communications, telecommunication networks, digital signal processing, wireless communications, and optical communications. These courses prepare students for careers in Canadian and global telecommunications industry.
  • *Power and Renewable Energy Option: Includes courses in controlled electric drives and renewable energy systems. Future smart grids will incorporate renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, and advanced control techniques for optimal energy management. This option features timely courses which train students to solve current and future industry issues.
  • Avionics and Control Option: Includes courses in flight control, avionics navigation systems, real-time computer control, and standards, regulation and certification, and provides training in airborne aerospace systems.
  • No Option: Those students who do not wish to choose a specialization must choose a minimum of 30 credits from the Electrical Engineering electives list.

* To fill the demand of power engineers, six Quebec universities, including Concordia, have partnered with Hydro Quebec to create the Institute for Electrical Power Engineering. Students admitted to this Institute must complete six courses offered by the participating universities. Some courses are in English and French. Students must register for courses in their home university.

Sample projects:

  • FM Wireless Receiver
  • Solar Home Electric Vehicle Charger
  • Wind Energy Conversion System

Sample courses include:

Techniques in Electromagnetic Compatibility, Flight Control Systems, Electronics II, Networks Security and Management, Wireless Communication, Renewable Energy Systems, Real-time Computer Control Systems

Co-op Program

Students may analyze power consumption and measurements and support the hardware team in designing state of the art cards in multidisciplinary environments (FPGA, Optical front end, Datacom, control, signal integrity and EMC). As they progress, students contribute to the engineering design and problem solving processes, produce formal project proposals and reports including specifications and plans, and validate and optimize prototypes in the field.
