Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering involves the planning and construction of complex physical facilities such as buildings, bridges, dams, and tunnels, and the engineering aspects of water resources, waste disposal, transportation, soil mechanics, urban planning, and environmental impact assessment.

BEng in Civil Engineering — 119 credits

• Civil Infrastructure Option: Designed for students interested in structural, geotechnical and transportation engineering.
• Environmental Option: Tailored for students wishing to pursue careers in environmental engineering.
• Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) Option: Designed for students interested in the field of construction engineering and project management.

Sample projects:

• Design of a multi-story apartment or commercial building in reinforced concrete (basic drawings and calculations)
• Determination of traffic flows on a transportation network for planning purposes
• Waste management collection and reduction

Co-op Program

Civil engineering work often starts at the computer, sorting data and gathering statistics. After the summer session of the first year of study, students can offer the skill of surveying as they develop and expand their knowledge and work-related skills. By the time co-op students are into their final project, they are helping the project along in a way that most firms expect from their qualified engineers. Assigned tasks include producing formal project proposals and reports, specifications and plans. Students should be able to apply acquired analytical skills in engineering analysis when appropriate.
