Computer Applications Option

This option gives students the flexibility to combine a solid grounding of hardware and software with another field of study outside the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. Students are free to declare a major or minor in another discipline.

Admission Requirements

Computer Applications (BCompSci - Option) requirements: Minimum cut-off averages, admission statistics and program requirements.

Computer Science Co-op Program

Since every company has its own distinct software and hardware, our students are given the necessary skills and tools to progress and excel in their field. As students develop, research begins to play a role in their work. They may check code, maintain departmental intranet sites, be involved in gathering requirements for web based projects and providing technical support. Some students are given sections of a project to work on individually, then present collectively with their team. Students are included in website and software quality assurance and they participate in programming, debugging and testing software.

With Major in Computation Arts

Combines two core curricula: computer science and the digital media component of design art. Graduates are technically adept in programming, algorithm design and computational theory, and are creatively skilled in image, sound and virtual dimension design.

Applicants must meet the portfolio requirements for the Computation Arts Program. See Portfolio Requirements

Sample courses include:

Web In Sites, Image/Sound/Dimension, Interactive Multimedia, Design Fundamentals, The Languages of Programming, New Media Theory, Networks and Navigation

Computation Arts Co-op Program

Recent co-op work terms have involved students in creating templates for web projects and companies, as well as updating, replacing and creating new icons, splash screens and logos. Co op students have trained budding film makers in the latest digital techniques, assisted in Toonz and USAnimation tasks of colouring, compositing, and checking animation. Students in Computation Arts can work with Macromedia Flash, design graphics using Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, and program with JAVA, PERL, XML.

Admission Requirements

Computer Applications (BCompSci - Option) with Computation Arts (BFA Major) requirements: Minimum cut-off averages, admission statistics and program requirements.

With Major in Mathematics and Statistics

Provides a foundation for integrated studies in computer science and mathematics. The mathematics component of the program includes topics that overlap with computer science, such as modelling, symbolic computation, and combinations, as well as the standard topics of a mathematical curriculum.

Sample courses include:

Programming Methodology, Technical Writing & Communication, Multivariable Calculus, Introduction to Optimization, Mathematical Modelling, Combinatorics, Numerical Methods

Admission Requirements

Computer Applications (BCompSci) with Mathematics and Statistics (BA/BSc Major): Minimum cut-off averages, admission statistics and program requirements.

Computer Science graduates are qualified to:

  • design and create new software, and modify and test existing software used in a broad range of businesses and industries;
  • devise new and more efficient algorithms and techniques;
  • analyze and develop computer solutions to meet clients' information processing, database and computation needs;
  • plan and implement computer security systems for database access control;
  • provide technical support for sales functions requiring specialized knowledge;
  • advise clients on their computing needs or provide support in the development of the software and hardware;
  • make decisions involving people, materials and money where knowledge of both computer software and hardware is essential.

Graduates may find careers in a wide variety of sectors including health care, communications, manufacturing, banking, retail, as well as the aeronautical, automotive, electrical and entertainment industries. Our graduates have been hired by IBM, Matrox, Nortel Networks and Ubisoft.
