The Accountancy curriculum is designed to impart the necessary skills required for entry into the accounting profession. The Department offers a wide selection of accounting courses that satisfy the educational requirements for the three major Canadian accounting designations: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA), and Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Graduates have been very successful in passing the national examinations required for qualification as professional accountants, most notably the success of the Diploma in Chartered Accountancy graduates in passing the Uniform Final Examinations of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

The CA designation provides entry into the public accounting professions and employment within public accounting firms. CGA graduates are employed in a variety of organizations, including accounting firms, federal, provincial and municipal governments, not-for-profit organizations (e.g. charities, hospitals), manufacturing companies and financial institutions. The CMA designation prepares the candidate for work in organizations as a member of the management team. The program leading to the CMA designation is accredited by CMA Canada. Many students also seek the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in the United States.

Sample courses include:

Financial Reporting I, II and III, Cost and Management Accounting, Income Taxation in Canada, Fraud Prevention and Investigation, Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting, Advanced Management Accounting, Assurance Services

Accountancy Co-op Program:

The co-op program links the academic requirements of the BComm in Accountancy with practical paid work experience. It introduces students and employers to the advantage of a connection between business, university and government. Many co-op students intend to obtain one of three professional accountancy designations: CA, CGA or CMA. Concordia’s graduates have been notably successful in passing the Uniform Final Examination of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Work tasks may include:

  • Preparing financial statements
  • Handling personal and corporate tax files
  • Conducting audits and performing inventory counts
  • Doing bank reconciliations
  • Undertaking small business tax evaluation
  • Participating in cost accounting dossiers
  • Advising on financial and managerial situations
