Philosophy

Do you enjoy thinking about and discussing ideas such as the meaning of life, the values at the basis of our society, or the nature of mind and matter? Are you interested in what the great thinkers have to say about human potential and our highest ideals? Courses in philosophy challenge our thinking and provide the occasion to clarify our ideas and to communicate effectively.

• Honours in Philosophy — 60 credits
  A solid base for students who wish to go on to graduate school in philosophy or to pursue a degree in law, administration or public service. It constitutes a thorough and rigorous training in the basic areas of philosophy (ethics, logic, theory of knowledge, the nature of mind and matter) as viewed from several traditions: ancient Greek, modern and contemporary writings from British, North American, Australian and European styles of thinking.

• Major in Philosophy — 36 credits
  Designed for students who wish to acquire the depth and breadth of thinking offered by courses in the main branches of philosophy while leaving themselves open to take a large number of elective courses in philosophy and in other disciplines.

• Minor in Philosophy — 24 credits
  Provides students with a valuable accompaniment to a major in another complementary discipline. The study of philosophy is useful training for the mind and will improve students’ capacity to raise the basic questions in any field of endeavour and to express their ideas clearly.
