Economics (BA)

Economists provide essential knowledge for business leaders and policy-makers who must make decisions in the presence of challenges such as economic fluctuations, interest rate and currency volatilities, government budget deficits and economic growth sustainability.

• Honours in Economics — 60 credits
  Intended for students planning to pursue graduate studies. Emphasis is placed on econometrics and advanced economic theory. A high level of performance is required to enter and remain in the program.

• Specialization in Economics — 60 credits
  Intended for students interested in following an applied and policy-oriented curriculum, rather than the more theoretical honours program. The specialization program has an alternative advanced applied econometrics course. Flexibility is built into the program to accommodate those who wish to later switch into the Honours program.

• Major in Economics — 42 credits*
  Designed to train students to use economic theory to tackle real world challenges. Built around a series of core economic theory and econometric courses, the program includes a wide range of elective courses that examine issues such as international policies, competition regulations, environmental challenges and financial analyses.

• Minor in Economics — 30 credits*
  Offers students from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to examine the workings of economics in everyday decision-making.

• Minor in Analytical Economics — 24 credits
  Designed for students with a strong scientific background and enrolled in Science, Mathematics/Statistics or Engineering programs, this minor examines the important role economics plays in society. Some technical prerequisites that are usually required for advanced studies in Economics are waived.

*May also be taken within the Bachelor of/Baccalaureate in Commerce degree.

Economics Co-op Program

Aimed at academically strong students who are committed to getting practical experience in their field, work-term placements range from provincial and federal departments to companies in insurance, banking and telecommunications. Students may assist with quantitative and qualitative analyses, policy research, econometric analyses and interpretation of survey data. Entry requires an interview and a high level of academic performance. A minimum grade point average must be maintained.
