Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics

Are you intrigued by the ancient world? Captivated by different languages? The Department of Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics offers a unique opportunity to study one or more of seven disciplines. Whether your goal is to acquire a solid background in the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, to learn about and/or strengthen skills in critical thinking, language proficiency, intercultural understanding and literary studies or to garner in-depth understanding of linguistics as the scientific study of the human language, the Department has what you are looking for.

Classics

Classics encompasses the study of the history, literature, languages, mythology, and archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome. Classical studies presents the experience of classical civilizations as being part of a continuum of human experiences that includes 21st-century cultures and offers a challenging program through which students may explore Western cultural roots.

Classics programs provide a solid background in the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome through written documents, historical and literary sources, and archaeological evidence; and train students to read and interpret texts in ancient Greek and Latin.

  • Honours in Classics — 60 credits
    Intended for students who wish to continue their studies at the graduate level. The honours program may be completed with a focus on Classical Languages and Literature or Classical Civilization.

  • Major in Classics — 42 credits
    Designed to give students ample knowledge of the cultures, civilizations, languages and literatures of ancient Greece and Rome. Courses cover areas such as history, literature, languages, archaeology and mythology. The major can be focused on Classical Languages and Literature or Classical Civilization.

  • Minor in Classical Languages and Literature — 24 credits
    Designed to introduce students to Greek and Roman literature.

  • Minor in Classical Archaeology — 24 credits
    Designed to introduce students to Greece and Rome through a sampling of art and archaeology.

  • Minor in Classical Civilization — 24 credits
    Designed to introduce students to Ancient Greek and Roman civilization.

Modern Languages – Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Spanish

Many students come to the Department with varying degrees of former studies in the language in which they intend to specialize. Our programs are structured according to the capacities and needs of the individual. Language and translation courses provide a sound linguistic foundation.

All students with a background in the language must contact the Department to arrange to take the appropriate language placement test. The Department reserves the right to transfer a student to a higher-level language course if it is deemed that the course for which the student has registered is not appropriate for the extent of his or her knowledge of the language.

Arabic (Modern Standard)

Students with advanced Modern Standard Arabic skills are not eligible for admission to the minor or certificate programs.

  • Minor in Modern Arabic Language and Culture — 30 credits
    Offers students majoring in another discipline a broad knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic language and culture.

  • Certificate in Modern Arabic Language and Culture — 30 credits
    Designed for members of the community who are not already enrolled at Concordia University.

Chinese (Mandarin)

Students with advanced Modern Chinese language (Mandarin) skills are not eligible for admission to the Minor or the Certificate.

  • Minor in Modern Chinese Language (Mandarin) and Culture — 30 credits
    The minor gives students majoring in another discipline a broad knowledge of Chinese language and culture.

  • Certificate in Modern Chinese Language (Mandarin) and Culture — 30 credits
    Designed for members of the community who are not already enrolled at Concordia University.

German, Italian and Spanish

Our programs in German, Italian and Spanish open doors to new ways of understanding the world through these languages, cultures and literatures. Language courses are intended to develop the four basic language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. All courses above the introductory level are offered exclusively in the target language. Honours students must complete an Honours Essay and maintain specific performance requirements.

German

  • Honours in German — 60 credits
  • Major in German — 42 credits
    Admission is suspended for 2013-14.

  • Minor in German — 33 credits
    Designed for students already enrolled in a program at Concordia University.

    Gives students ample knowledge of the language, spoken and written, and a coherent overview of Italian culture, tradition, history and literature. Flexibility within the program allows students to study language, translation, culture and/or literature.

  • Minor in Italian — 30 credits
    Designed for students already enrolled in a program at Concordia University.

Spanish

  • Honours in Spanish — 60 credits (Literature and Society)
    Designed for students who intend to pursue graduate studies. This program is an extended version of the major.

  • Specialization in Spanish — 60 credits (Expression and Culture)
    An extended version of the major, students have the opportunity to focus their program on Spanish language and culture.

  • Major in Spanish — 42 credits
    Designed to give students ample knowledge of the language, spoken and written, within a coherent and critical approach to the study of Hispanic cultures, traditions, histories and literatures.

    • Option A – Literature and Society
      Explore the ways in which the literary discourses of Spain and Spanish America reflect and shape society in a historical context. This option can lead to the honours.
    • Option B – Expression and Culture
      Learn and practice techniques and structures of different modes of expression in Hispanic cultures. This option can lead to the specialization.

  • Minor in Spanish — 30 credits
    Designed for students already enrolled in a program at Concordia University.

  • Minor in Spanish Translation — 33 credits
    Designed for students already enrolled in a program at Concordia University. Combines courses in language, literature and translation.

Linguistics

Linguistics programs offer a sound linguistics basis and a rigorous academic and scientific investigation of the phenomena of language in general, and of certain languages in particular.

  • Honours in Linguistics — 60 credits
    Designed to provide students with a thorough foundation for graduate studies. Areas of emphasis include standard subfields of the discipline: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and typology. The interaction of theoretical courses, data-oriented courses and courses in historical and comparative linguistics (both Indo-European and non-Indo-European) forms a diverse and substantial foundation for the exceptional student who hopes to do graduate work in Comparative Indo-European, theoretical linguistics, or any other area related to linguistics.

  • Major in Linguistics — 42 credits
    A diverse program that includes topics of a broad philosophical, sociological and historical nature leading to the minutely detailed analysis of specific data. The program strengthens and refines students’ intellectual skills through in-depth training in the writing of grammars and formulation of rules by introducing the rich tradition of linguistic scholarship, as well as the critical examination and discussion of acknowledged masters of linguistic thought.

  • Minor in Linguistics — 24 credits
    Designed for students already enrolled in a program at Concordia University.
