Other forms of misconduct

It is not acceptable to do the following:

Student in library
  • Copy from ANYWHERE without saying from where it came.
  • Omit quotation marks for direct quotations.
  • Let another student copy your work and then submit it as his/her own.
  • Hand in the same assignment in more than one class without permission.
  • Have unauthorized material in an exam, such as cheat sheets, or crib notes. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE CAUGHT USING THEM - JUST HAVING THEM WILL GET YOU INTO TROUBLE!
  • Copy from someone else's exam.
  • Communicate with another student during an exam by talking or using some form of signals.
  • Add or remove pages from an examination booklet or take the booklet out of an exam room.
  • Get hold of or steal an exam or assignment answers or questions.
  • Write a test or exam for someone else or have someone write it for you.
  • Hand in false documents such as medical notes, transcript or record.
  • Falsify data or research results.

How To Avoid Academic Misconduct?

  • Take pride in your own work.
  • Complete assignments yourself, even if you have worked in a group or discussed the assignment with other students. (If group work is allowed, your professors will clearly inform you.)
  • Do not lend your work to another student, even if it is your best friend! If someone copies your work, you may be charged with an academic offense.
  • Be truthful in any documents you submit to the University.
  • If you think a project completed in one course is suitable for the requirements of another course, verify with the professors before handing it in.
  • If you have any questions, or are uncertain about expectations in a course ASK THE PROFESSOR. If you are having problems meeting deadlines ASK THE PROFESSOR. If you are experiencing personal problems that are interfering with your studies ASK THE PROFESSOR. You may feel that these described situations are good excuses for committing a dishonest act, but they are not. YOU HAVE A CHOICE. CHEATING IS NOT A GOOD ONE.

Why is this important?

If you rely on dishonest behaviour to complete your degree, your degree becomes worthless. You are attending university to learn, and cheating is not the way to do it. If you are dishonest, this will remain with you and may very well create problems in your future career.
