Honorary degree citation - Rebecca Brent

By: Alex De Visscher, November 2019

Mr. President, it is my honour to present to you Dr. Rebecca Brent, influential educator of teachers.

Dr. Brent started her career as a primary school teacher. It was only during her doctorate in education, while supervising beginning teachers, that she realized her calling was to teach other teachers.

Avec le professeur Richard Felder, elle a donné plus de 600 ateliers sur l’enseignement et le perfectionnement des professeurs dans le domaine du génie.

In her 35 years in the field she has written extensively on subjects that are highly valued by universities like Concordia that prioritize quality and innovation in teaching. The well-read blog of the consulting firm she runs with Dr. Felder, Education Designs, Inc., is quite comprehensive. It covers everything from the principles and techniques of good teaching, to student motivations and resistance, to tips for students.

Drs. Brent and Felder have also codified many of their ideas in their 2016 book Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide.

Mr. President, on behalf of Senate and the Board of Governors, it is my privilege and honour to present to you Dr. Rebecca Brent, so that you may confer upon her the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
