April 18 and 19 - Native Residential Schools in Quebec: Legacies for Research

Legacies for research share knowledge to engage in meaningful conversations

This mini-conference is being organized in direct response to a request by representatives of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Conference, for universities to meaningfully engage the academic community. Additionally, the workshop would like to redress the lack of visibility of French speaking survivors and researchers in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) national events. The workshop will examine the little known history of residential schools in Quebec and contextualize these institutions within the national framework of the colonial system.

The objective of the mini-conference is threefold. First, to raise the awareness of the issue of residential schools within the Quebec context leading up to the TRC’s event. Second, to bring together a group of people to discuss the legacies of the schools, as well as share research findings and direct future research. Third, to lend support to the TRC mandate of bringing about reconciliation through the open sharing of knowledge.

Too many Canadians and Aboriginal peoples are unaware of the schools’ legacy within theprovince. This is partly due to the language barriers and overall emphasis on the western Canadian schools experience. We hope to expand the vision of the residential school experience in Canada by adding those aspects that were particular to the Quebec context. To further this goal, we aim to publish conference proceedings in both French and English.
