David Meren, assistant professor at the Université de Montréal, is giving a lecture titled, “Beyond the General: Decolonization, Culture, and Race in the Canada-Quebec-France Triangle, 1944-1970” as part of the History Department Speaker Series.
One of the most enduring images of 1960s Quebec is Charles de Gaulle shouting “Vive le Québec libre!” from the balcony of Montreal City Hall. Moving beyond the polarizing figure of de Gaulle and his cri du balcon, this talk will explore how the interwoven questions of decolonization, culture, and race informed the emergence and evolution of a complex triangular dynamic between France, Quebec, and Canada in the quarter-century after the Second World War.
When: Friday, January 18, 2013 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Where: History Department Seminar Room, Room LB-1014, J.W. McConnell Library Building (1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.), Sir George Williams Campus
