Sen. and LtGen Roméo Dallaire (ret) opens the March conference, Beyond Testimony and Trauma, on March 22 at the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ).
The conference is organized by Concordia University’s Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling, the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies and the Montreal Life Stories Project, a 7-year Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) that has explored the life of Montrealers displaced by war, genocide and other human rights violations.
In Rwanda, where Dallaire headed the U.N. peacekeeping force during the 1994 genocide, the post-genocide period was marked by the establishment of international tribunals on human rights and reconciliation initiatives. In his presentation, Dallaire will explore how we can takes lessons from past atrocities and prevent future atrocities.
At the opening, Dallaire will be introcduced by Callixte Kabayiza from Page-Rwanda and Life Stories, and will be moderated by Lisa Ndejuru of Isangano and Life Stories. The event will be held in French with simultaneous translation into English.
Tickets are free of charge and available on the BaNQ website. Seats are not guaranteed to those without tickets. Those without tickets will only be permitted to enter the auditorium after all those with tickets have been seated.
