A bilingual postcard that explains the smoking rules on campus will soon be given to people who smoke within the nine-metre no-smoking perimeter required by law around all building entrances on campus. Yellow lines are painted on the ground outside entrance doors to identify the smoke-free zones.
“The cold weather often leads people to smoke closer to building entrances,” says Pat Pietromonaco, senior director of property management in Facilities Management. “It contravenes Quebec law. Our security staff will be advising smokers to stand outside the designated smoke-free zones and will be handing out postcards that explain smoking rules on campus.”
The smoke-free zone applies to all Concordians as well as to the public. The Government of Quebec legislation that prohibits smoking fewer than nine metres from a post-secondary school entrance came into effect in 2006.
