The city of Montreal is currently finishing a major construction project along De Maisonneuve Boulevard West, between Bishop and St-Mathieu streets.
While the university is liaising with city officials to minimize the impact on students returning to class, as well as on faculty members and staff, the remaining roadwork is expected to create some disruptions over the next few weeks.
In addition to the work already complete – which includes the installation of permanent bike path features and the expansion, by nearly seven feet, of the sidewalk in front of the J.W. McConnell Library Building – this entire section of the boulevard will soon be fully repaved, the sidewalk in front of the Hall Building widened and a significant amount of green space added to the area.
Repaving between Guy and St-Mathieu Streets is expected to be completed by September 5, while roadwork between Bishop and Guy has been postponed until the completion of the remaining sidewalk renovations towards the last week of September.
Police stationed along Bishop and Mackay Streets will coordinate vehicular and pedestrian traffic on September 5 and 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
New students should also keep an eye out for the Dean of Students office’s Welcome Crew, recognizable by the large question mark logos on their yellow T-shirts. These student greeters will be posted in front of the Hall and Library buildings, ready to help direct new and returning Concordians alike.
Other construction updates:
• The De Maisonneuve entrance to the Hall Building is expected to reopen on September 6, with a fenced-off corridor accessible from Mackay Street. The building’s tunnels will remain open throughout this phase of work, and metro riders are encouraged to use these.
• The shuttle bus stop will remain in its current location (northwest corner of Mackay and Ste-Catherine streets) until both the sidewalk renovation and street repaving work is complete, currently scheduled for the end of September.
• Renovations to the Hall Building’s escalators are nearly finished, with service restored from the metro-level tunnels to the fifth floor, as well as from floors seven through twelve. The final phase of the work, which includes wall refurbishing and the installation of new escalators on the remaining floors, is expected to be complete by late December.
