Services for Aboriginal students gets new name

Centre for Native Education becomes the Aboriginal Student Resource Centre

The Centre for Native Education has recently changed its name to the Aboriginal Student Resource Center (ASRC), which reflects more specifically what the centre has to offer to students; resources and services. To keep a fresh approach with the changes around the centre, it was decided to choose a new name with the participation of students and staff.

The centre is a home away from home that offers Aboriginal students a workspace, a computer lab with a printer/copier, a documentation centre and library, and a comfortable lounge area. An Elder shares and teaches cultural and spiritual knowledge and a writing assistant helps students improve their writing skills. The centre also networks with various departments and services in the university to implement supportive academic workshops for students.

Seasonal feasts are held to help students connect, network and celebrate their traditions and culture. The feasts are a key component in gathering the students together and supporting nation-building within the institution.

The staff, including a new coordinator and a new department assistant, is excited to meet the new Aboriginal students coming to Concordia this fall and welcomes back all returning students as well.

The Aboriginal Student Resource Centre is located in Room 641 of the Henry F. Hall Building (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.), Sir George Williams Campus.
