Call for nominations for non-voting members of Senate

Nominations to be received before August 13, 2012

The Associate Vice-President of Human Resources, Carolina Willsher, has been asked to convene the Electoral College for the purpose of nominating two members from the administrative and support staff to sit as non-voting members of Senate for a three-year term ending September 14, 2015.

While normally both representatives would be appointed to a three-year term, one member will be initially appointed for three years and the other for two years to allow for staggered terms.

The Electoral College consists of a representative from the associations and unions recognized by the university and is convened to nominate permanent full- or part-time permanent members of the administrative and support staff on the Board of Governors and any university-wide committee in conformity with the Electoral College Policy (Policy A-50).

Senate is the senior academic body and establishes procedures for the governance of its own affairs. It derives its powers from the Board of Governors and, subject to the latter's over-arching authority, has the final authority in all matters pertaining to the academic programs of the university. Its powers and functions are listed under article 49 of the By-Laws. Senate is composed of 53 voting members and six non-voting members, as outlined in article 41 of the by-laws.

Procedure

Any permanent full- or part-time permanent member of the administrative and support staff member may be nominated, with the exception of staff members reporting directly to the president or any of the vice-presidents. These members may nominate or endorse a nomination.

The nomination form must be signed and agreed to by the candidate and include the signature of the nominator as well as the endorsement of 10  additional permanent full- or part-time  permanent  members of the administrative and support staff from a relevant unit.

Candidates must submit a pen sketch, which should include information on why they are interested in serving on the Senate. See the related links to access the relevant forms.

Please submit nominations and pen sketches by Monday, August 13, 2012 to: Carolina Willsher, associate vice-president, human resources, S-FB 1130 or fax to 2844.

The Electoral College will be convened on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in room MB 14.250.

The Electoral College will be provided with the submitted pen sketches prior to the meeting. If more information is required from the candidates to make a decision, interviews will be arranged for Wednesday, August 15, 2012.

Once the Electoral College has nominated each representative, the names of the candidates will be submitted to the Secretary of the Board of Governors for ratification.
